The Clueless closet, with Cher rotating outfits on a computer screen, has been the fashion fantasy of a generation since 1995. Phia builds the real version from your own clothes, with a closet that fills itself, outfits on demand and a virtual try-on. Here is how close we have finally come.

The Clueless Closet App: Cher's Digital Closet in Real Life
Cher's computer, 1995
Clueless came out in the summer of 1995, and within the first few minutes Cher Horowitz is choosing her outfit on a computer, flipping through tops and skirts on screen until it declares a match. Amy Heckerling has said the idea came from paper dolls, Polaroids and a friend who had catalogued her wine collection. Thirty years on, the Clueless closet is still the image people describe when they ask for a closet app.
Confession #1: I wanted that closet so badly at twelve that I tried to build it with a binder and a disposable camera. I photographed four outfits before I ran out of film and patience.
The fantasy was never really about the computer. It was about seeing everything you own, putting it together without trying everything on, and leaving the house feeling sure of yourself. That part is finally buildable.

The closet that fills itself
The part of the Clueless closet the film skips is setup. Someone had to photograph every piece in Cher's wardrobe, and in real life that is where every closet app dies. Phia skips most of it.
Connect Gmail and Phia reads retailer order confirmations, receipts and shipping emails, turning each purchase into a closet item with its photo, brand, size and color. Instant camera roll sync adds clothes you have already photographed and cleans up the backgrounds. Anything you buy through the Phia extension lands in the closet at checkout.
Within minutes, the closet looks like a real wardrobe, scrollable on your phone. I wrote about that first step in The Digital Closet App That Builds Itself, because it is the difference between a fantasy and something you use every day.

Flipping through outfits
The famous Clueless moment is Cher flipping through combinations until one works. Phia has a few ways to do that. Style it yourself lets you pick pieces from your closet and save the outfit, top, skirt, bag and shoes, exactly like the scene. Generate outfit builds several complete looks at once from scratch. Style from one item builds a full outfit around a single piece you pick.
Suggested outfits for you appear at the top of the Outfits tab, and Styled by Phia in the For you tab sends a new outfit idea every day once you have five tops and five bottoms, factoring in your local weather if you add your city.
A practical test: recreate a Cher look from your own closet. A plaid blazer, a short skirt, knee socks if you are brave. Style from one item on the blazer will tell you how close you can get with what you already own.

The try-on Cher did not have
Cher's computer could tell her when an outfit was a mismatch. Phia goes a step further with virtual try-on. It takes a photo of you and a product image and generates a picture of you wearing the piece, from the item menu with Try it on.
It works for clothes in your closet and for things you are thinking of buying, which is where it is most useful. Seeing a color against your own face is a faster answer than any description.
What I would skip: using try-on to choose a size. It is a vibe check, not a fit guide. For fit, read the brand's measurements. You can also teach Phia your taste in Style analysis, where Styling rules let you add up to ten rules you swear by. Cher would have written several.

As if
Thirty years later, the Clueless closet has gone from a movie prop to an app on your phone. It fills itself, flips through outfits, describes your style and shows you wearing something before you buy it. The rotating rack is still extra credit.
Phia is a shopping assistant first, so when the closet reveals a gap, it compares prices across more than 220,000 sites, new and secondhand, and applies coupons at checkout.
To build your own, download the free Phia app, connect Gmail and let the closet fill, then open the Outfits tab and start flipping. On a laptop, add the Chrome extension. Cher had a computer the size of a desk. You have your phone.
