The ankle boot with a heel you can walk in

Stacked and block heel ankle boots in leather and suede, from black pointed toe booties to brown and tan cowboy-leaning pairs, plus how to wear a low heel ankle boot with jeans and midi skirts.

Why a stacked heel is the right height

A stacked heel gives you a few inches without a wobble. It is the heel height that goes from office to dinner without a shoe change.

I split the boots by color: black pairs that work with everything, then browns and tans that warm up a winter outfit.

Black block heel ankle boots

Sleek leather and suede boots with a square or pointed toe, from a sock-like shape to a soft slouch.

My fitting room test: walk down a flight of stairs. If your heel lifts or the shaft pinches your calf, the fit is wrong. Pass on: a heel that looks stacked but is actually hollow plastic.

Brown, tan and burgundy ankle boots

Chocolate leather, caramel suede, taupe and oxblood in a mix of pointed and rounded toes.

What I check: how the color reads in daylight. Suede in particular can look gray indoors and warm outside. What I would skip: a boot you have to size up in because the toe box runs tight.

How I would wear a block heel boot

Tuck straight jeans into the shaft or let a midi skirt skim the top. A low heel boot is also the right answer for wet pavement.
