A small zoo for your handbag

Animals are the oldest trick in the charm book, and they still work. I looked at what Poppy Lissiman, Susan Alexandra and Stoney Clover Lane make and sorted every animal by lightness, black on the left and cream on the right. The prices go from $38 to $118, and the pattern is that the more you pay, the more fabric and detail you get.

The darker ones

Poppy Lissiman's plush rats are $38 in black and blue, and Susan Alexandra's black cat and goat are $48. They read as a mood more than a cute accessory, which is why I like them on a black bag. The black cat is the one I would buy for anyone who says they do not like charms.

The in-between

Susan Alexandra's Whiskers, Good Bunny and Pigatha Bee sit in the middle, with the bee at $60 and the others at $48. Stoney Clover Lane's puffy fish in Liberty fabric is $48 and is the cheapest way into their print work. These are the charms that hold up when a bag is already a color.

The collectible ones

Stoney Clover Lane's Scotty dog is $68, the Cabana bear is $88, the Liberty fabric bear is $98 and the Ruby Lynn rattler is $118. These are the ones I would treat like a small gift to myself, since they are made to last longer than a trend. The rattler is a snake in a bag charm, which is why I love it.

Pick the one you would name

If you would name it, buy it. That is the only test I trust for an animal charm.
