Alaïa Brand Guide: The History, the Signature Bags and Shoes, and the Clothes Behind Them

Alaïa explained, from Azzedine Alaïa in Paris to the Le Teckel, the mesh flats and the clothes that define the house

An Alaïa deep dive covering the history of the Paris house, from Azzedine Alaïa to the Pieter Mulier years, plus 128 pieces from seven retailers: Le Teckel and Le Cœur bags, mesh ballet flats, Vienne laser-cut styles, knitwear, Barrel jeans, leather, coats, belts and sunglasses.

Alaïa explained: the Tunis-born couturier, the Paris house and the Le Teckel bag

Alaïa is a Paris house founded by Azzedine Alaïa, who was born in Tunis in 1935 and moved to Paris in 1956. His Maison launched under his own name in 1983, and in 1982 he had already shown in New York at Bergdorf Goodman. He built clothes that follow the body, and Richemont still describes the house today as celebrating the female form with a knitting technique that works as a second skin.

This story is a deep dive on the whole brand, with 128 pieces from seven retailers including Farfetch, Net-A-Porter, Bergdorf Goodman and Neiman Marcus. I am starting with bags, because the Le Teckel is the shape most people now recognise. It is long and low and named for its resemblance to a dachshund, and it comes in leather, suede and nubuck.

Le Cœur: the heart-shaped Alaïa bags

The Le Cœur is the other bag I would point a first-time buyer toward. The heart shape is graphic and clean, with no logo splashed across it, which is how Alaïa tends to work. I like the suede versions for fall because the colour looks deeper, and the glossy leather versions for evening.

If you want one bag that carries the whole mood of the house, a small black Le Cœur is a safe start. The oxblood and brown ones are what I would reach for with a camel coat.

Le Click, Le Bouledogue, Cube and the wider Alaïa bag family

Past the two best known shapes, Alaïa has a whole family of bags. Le Click is a soft, slouchy shoulder bag, the Le Bouledogue is a compact top handle, and there are totes and clutches built on the same clean lines.

I would choose among them by how you carry a bag. Shoulder bags suit a commute, top handles suit a dinner, and the East West shapes sit comfortably under a coat.

Alaïa mesh ballet flats and Mary Janes

Alaïa's mesh ballet flats with a Mary Jane strap are one of the most widely copied shoes of the Pieter Mulier years, and they are where most shoe collections begin. The mesh is open and light, and the toe is soft and rounded.

For fall, I would pick them in black or a deep brown and wear them with opaque tights and trousers that skim the shoe. Some versions add crystals, grommets or fishnet, and the pieces below show the range.

Alaïa ballerinas in leather, suede and crystal

Once you have the mesh idea, the same flat shape shows up in suede, patent, studded and crystal versions. The silhouette stays slim and low, and the detail changes.

These are the ones I would wear into the evening with a plain knit dress, since the embellishment does the talking. Suede is my favorite for a day look in colder months.

Alaïa heels: the Mina pump, slingbacks and the Cœur heel

The heel side of the house is sharp and quite architectural. There are pointed pumps, slingbacks with clear straps, wedge pumps and Cœur-detail heels, and each has a clean line that reads as Alaïa without a logo.

I would wear a pointed black pump with a long wool coat and a slingback with tailored trousers. The lower heels are the ones that would work with the most outfits.

Alaïa boots, platforms, mules and wedges

The cold-weather shoes are the most fun. There are knee-high boots, mesh ankle booties, burgundy patent platform Mary Janes and denim mules with a wooden sole.

A platform Mary Jane gives a plain black outfit a point of view, and a mesh bootie feels sharp under wide trousers. I would start with whichever silhouette is closest to what you already wear.

The Vienne pattern: Alaïa's laser-cut look

Richemont lists the Vienne pattern, studs and eyelets as part of the house signature. Vienne is a pattern of laser-cut openings, and it appears on dresses, skirts, tops, boots and bags.

I like it best in black or ivory, where the pattern reads as texture and not as decoration. A Vienne piece over a plain layer is the easiest way in.

Alaïa knitwear and bodysuits: the second-skin silhouette

Knitwear is where Alaïa's body-conscious reputation comes from. The house's own description is a knit that underlines the body like a second skin, and the pieces here include cropped cardigans, ribbed tops, bodysuits and leggings.

I think of these as a foundation. A black bodysuit with a coat and trousers is a full outfit in five minutes.

Alaïa Barrel jeans and denim

Denim is a newer chapter for the house. The Barrel jean has a rounded leg that is cinched at the waist, and Le Monde counts it among the best sellers of the Mulier era.

I would wear a dark wash barrel jean with a fitted knit and a flat. There are also straight cuts, tinted colours and a denim bodysuit for anyone who wants something less expected.

Alaïa leather jackets, skirts and suede tailoring

A cropped leather biker jacket is the piece I would start with, and a leather midi skirt is the one I would add next. Both look expensive without announcing it.

Alaïa skater dresses and crinoline skirts

Next to the fitted pieces, Alaïa also makes shapes that flare. The Skater dress is part of the house story, and the crinoline skirts and pleated minis play with volume in the same spirit.

I would wear a flared knit dress with boots and a long coat. The fuller skirts balance a fitted top.

Alaïa gowns, corsets and evening dressing

Evening is where the cut matters most. The gowns here use jersey, velvet, sequins and lace, and the corset and halter shapes show off the structure underneath.

I would pick one with a strong back or shoulder line and keep everything else quiet. These are special-occasion pieces, and they are the ones I would save for a big night.

Alaïa coats, trenches and tailoring

For his last Alaïa show in March 2026, Pieter Mulier presented a collection about clothes to wear, and the coat was a centerpiece. The coats here run from a belted leather biker to a long double-breasted wool coat and a leopard print.

A perfectly cut coat is what I would invest in first. Pair a black wool coat with the knits above and you have a winter wardrobe.

Alaïa belts, jewelry and small accessories

If a full piece feels like a leap, the small accessories are a gentle way in. There are sculpted belts, laser-cut leather corsets, hoops and flower earrings, and a pair of long gloves.

A wide belt over a coat or a long knit changes the line of an outfit. I would choose the black ones first, since they work with everything.

Alaïa sunglasses

Alaïa eyewear is bold in shape. There are oversized shields, soft rectangles, rounded cat-eyes and stud-trimmed styles, and a pair of dark sunglasses works through the colder months.

I would pick a black pair for the everyday and a tortoiseshell for something softer. They sit well with a long coat and slicked-back hair.

How I would start with Alaïa

If I were starting from nothing, I would buy a Le Teckel or Le Cœur, a pair of mesh Mary Janes and a black wool coat, and add knitwear after that. The house has now moved past Pieter Mulier's tenure, which ended with the March 2026 show, and the studio is carrying the Maison's codes forward.

Prices vary between retailers, so open a few tabs and compare before you buy. Every piece in this story is linked, and each of the seven retailers carries a different part of the range.
